From April 14 to 17, 2026, the XX International Olympiad in Theoretical Mechanics was held at the Belarusian State University of Transport (Gomel). Students from 22 universities from Belarus, Russia, China and Turkmenistan took part in the competition. Among the participants of the Olympiad were students of the Mechanical Engineering, Military Technical Faculty and the Faculty of Information Technology and Robotics Faculties: Ilya Sivy (group 10309124), Ivan Likhavitsky (group 10301324), Alexander Volkov (group 10309123), David Dragun (group 10705224), Ivan Sidrolev (group 11501124), Alexander Tsanda (group 11501224). The team was prepared by Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials Larysa Bialiatskaya and Senior Lecturer of the Department Maryna Myshkavets. The team was led during the competition by senior lecturer of the department Alina Daronina.
The Olympiad consisted of two stages: an individual theoretical competition and a brain-ring. Over 100 students participated in the theoretical competition, with individual and team scores calculated. The theoretical competition lasted four hours, during which time participants had to solve eight problems (two on statics, two on kinematics, and four on dynamics).
On the second day of the Olympiad, a team brain-ring competition took place, each teams of three were required to solve 30 problems (10 each in statics, kinematics, and dynamics) in 60 minutes. After the brain-ring, an analysis of solutions to Olympiad problems took place, during which the jury members explained the scoring system for each problem and highlighted key points in solving them. Presentations were held in Russian or English (Chinese was also used when necessary).
Based on the results of the individual theoretical competition, among those awarded bronze medals and third-degree diplomas (the best result among participants from Belarus) was our Mechanical Engineering Faculty student Ilya Sivyi, who also recently won a bronze diploma at the V Open International Internet Olympiad in the discipline “Theoretical Mechanics”. It should be noted that the competition at the Olympics was very high. As for the individual standings, the best results were achieved by Chinese students (Tsinghua University had the top three results, ranking 17th in QS), as well as a student from South Ural State University and a student from the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan.
Outside the framework of the International Olympiad, the results of the next Republican Olympiad in Theoretical Mechanics were announced. Ilya Sivyi took the first place in the individual competition. In the team competition, our university was awarded a second-degree diploma. Following the results of the brain ring, the team of Ilya Sivyi, Ivan Likhavitsky and David Dragun was awarded a first-degree diploma, and the team of Alexander Volkov, Ivan Sidrolev and Alexander Tsanda was awarded a second-degree diploma.
We wish our winners and runners-up continued success in their academic and research endeavors, as the Student Scientific Conference is just around the corner.
